Cardiff’s skateboarding and scooting community is about to get a major boost with the opening of a new, purpose-built skatepark in Llanrumney this Friday. Situated next to the Eastern Leisure Centre, the 1,000-square-meter concrete park is the result of a close collaboration between Cardiff Council, award-winning designers VDZ+A and Newline Skateparks, and the local Cardiff Skateboard Club (CSC).
The park was designed with direct input from local skaters from the very beginning. It has been described as a “destination” facility that offers a variety of features for all ages and skill levels. Skaters can expect flat banks, hips, steps, curbs, ledges, rails, and a mini ramp. The new concrete surface is durable, quieter, faster to dry, and more resistant to weather compared to the old timber-framed park it replaces.
Jim, a spokesperson for CSC, said, “Having skated in Cardiff for over 40 years, we can confidently say the facilities have never been better. We thank Cardiff Council for involving us in the process. We hope Llanrumney becomes a strong centre for skateboarding. We look forward to welcoming many new skaters at the shop.”
The new skatepark aims to encourage more people in Cardiff to take up skateboarding and scooting by offering an inclusive space suitable for beginners and experienced riders alike.
Cardiff Council has asked the public to wait until the official opening on Friday before using the park, as final preparations are still underway this week.
