While most skiers have packed away their gear for the season, Italy’s Passo Stelvio is preparing to open for its unique summer skiing season. Unlike many year-round resorts, Passo Stelvio operates exclusively during the warmer months, offering a rare opportunity for off-season snow sports in the Alps.
Located in northern Italy, Passo Stelvio will open its lifts from May 31 to November 2, 2025. The ski area spans more than 20 kilometers of groomed slopes and rises over 2,000 vertical feet along the flanks of Mount Cristallo. The resort also boasts sweeping views of the Ortles-Cevedale range and lies within the scenic Stelvio National Park.
Passo Stelvio’s seasonal schedule has made it a top training ground for elite snow athletes seeking year-round conditions. Italian alpine skier Sofia Goggia, a two-time Olympic medalist, trained at the resort last summer as part of her recovery from a serious knee injury.
In addition to downhill terrain, Passo Stelvio offers cross-country skiing circuits, catering to athletes focused on endurance training and aerobic conditioning.
A full-season pass at Passo Stelvio costs €845, or approximately $954 USD. Though the price may seem steep, the access to reliable summer snow and high-altitude terrain is a strong draw for professionals and dedicated enthusiasts alike.
For North American skiers interested in summer options closer to home, alternatives include Wyoming’s Beartooth Basin.
The resort, located near the Montana border, is the only ski area in North America that operates solely in the summer. Beartooth Basin plans to open on May 28, 2025, depending on conditions. Day passes cost $50, while a season pass runs $395.
Other well-known summer skiing spots include Oregon’s Timberline Lodge, which remains a reliable summer destination, and California’s Mammoth Mountain, which recently confirmed it will stay open into June.
