While most people have left the ski season behind, focusing instead on summer’s warmth, a few places in North America still keep the lifts running during this unusual transition period. Beartooth Basin Ski Area in southwest Montana is one of those rare spots, and this year it welcomed skiers back with open arms.
Unlike traditional ski resorts that close after spring, Beartooth Basin begins its season only once the snow has melted enough to open the access road. With snowdrifts up to 25 feet deep during winter, the road remains closed until late May. Once cleared, thanks to the hard work of road crews, the resort comes alive.
After several years of closure caused by poor snow and warm springs, Beartooth Basin reopened on May 28, 2025. The reopening was made possible by Austin Hart and a dedicated team of employees and volunteers who worked hard to get the Poma lifts running. The resort limits tickets to 100 riders daily, ensuring short lift lines and plenty of space on the slopes.
Visitors are encouraged to buy tickets online before arriving, as cell service on the highway pass is limited. Tickets can also be purchased in person, but availability is not guaranteed. Early visitors camp on nearby Forest Service land and arrive to cool, pleasant temperatures.
Once on site, skiers sign waivers and prepare for a day on terrain that is not suitable for beginners. The ski area offers varied runs with some rocky spots and soft snow, creating a challenging but thrilling experience. The lower section features snow piles shaped by operations crews, adding playful elements to the ride.
During a recent visit, the author had the chance to ski alongside Nordica athlete Brooks Curran and Jackson Hole filmer Bobby Thomson, enhancing the sense of camaraderie and fun. Despite legs needing to adjust after a break, the skiing was rewarding and exhilarating. The diesel-powered Poma lifts provide a solid workout, as they pull riders up steep faces.
By mid-afternoon, a thunderstorm rolled in, signaling the end of the day. Skiers removed their slush-filled boots and soaked in the unique atmosphere of a summer ski day, surrounded by others enjoying this rare experience.
Beartooth Basin offers more than just skiing—it delivers stunning views of Beartooth Pass and an unforgettable atmosphere high on the Montana-Wyoming border. Maintaining this summer ski area requires immense effort, including hauling equipment 5,000 feet up the mountain. Thanks to the dedication of the team behind the scenes, Beartooth Basin continues to thrive.
For those looking to extend their ski season into June, Beartooth Basin is a must-visit destination. It proves that with passion and hard work, summer skiing in Montana is alive and well.
