Two sections of state highways in Mackenzie Country that closed overnight due to snow and ice risks have now reopened.
State Highway 8, between Twizel and Fairlie, and State Highway 80, between Lake Pukaki and Aoraki/Mt Cook, were closed Saturday night to protect motorists and road crews.
The New Zealand Transport Agency said crews worked overnight gritting and treating icy patches on these roads. The closures were lifted around 10 a.m. Sunday.
Despite the reopenings, motorists are advised to drive carefully. A snowfall warning remains in effect for Porters Pass (State Highway 73) and the Crown Range Road until Monday morning.
Cold Start to the Day
Meteorologists say Sunday’s chill feels sharper after warmer than usual summer and early autumn weather.
Parts of the country woke up to the coldest temperatures this year, with sub-zero readings across the South Island, as well as in Hamilton and some areas of Wellington.
MetService meteorologist Devlin Lynden reported that the Mackenzie Basin dipped to -8°C, while Porirua near Wellington saw temperatures just below -1°C.
Lynden said cold conditions will persist for the next few days but should ease by midweek, bringing rain and cloud cover.
Ski Fields Open Across the Country
Manganui Ski Area claims the title of the first ski field to open this season in New Zealand.
After receiving around 50 cm of fresh snow overnight Friday, Manganui opened its T-bar and learner tow on Saturday morning. The ski field, operated by the Stratford Mountain Club, posted on social media: “First in the country again. Come on up for a play in the snow.”
Temperatures at Manganui were around 2°C on Sunday morning. Visitors were already arriving, with many staying just for the day. The ski field’s road was open but drivers were warned to expect icy conditions.
The Hanmer Springs Ski Area opened Sunday as the first ski field to open in the South Island.
The area reported a temperature of -5°C with scattered clouds and no wind. However, no grooming had been done, and the road to the ski field is only accessible by 4WD vehicles equipped with chains.
