JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The University of North Florida (UNF) Surf Team is preparing to compete in the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championships, set to take place June 13–15 in Huntington Beach, California.
This trip follows the team’s recent victory at the NSSA East Coast Championship in New Smyrna Beach, where UNF earned its 11th title. Now, the surfers are aiming to make their mark on the national stage.
Team member Jake Whitaker says the squad is focusing on preparation and enjoying the lead-up to the event.
“We’re just getting the feel of the water, shaking off the rust,” Whitaker said. “We have a couple of practice days before the competition starts. We enjoy any wave, and we probably see them a little differently than the kids over there. Even small waves — we’ll take them.”
Funding for the trip was made possible through a combination of sponsor support and custom t-shirt sales. Whitaker noted that while surfing is a major part of Jacksonville’s sports culture, the team still struggles to gain the recognition it deserves.
“Surfing is one of the biggest sports in Jacksonville, but we’re treated more like a club,” he said. “We have to go out and find our own sponsors and raise money to support our travel and competitions. We love the sport, and hopefully this kind of exposure brings more attention to surfing and the lifestyle that comes with it.”
For the team, the national championship isn’t just about competing — it’s also about connecting with others and enjoying the experience.
“That’s the fun part about UNF,” said teammate Tim Arnold. “We hang out and have fun. It’s not a super serious surf contest every time. We’re all friends — even with the other schools. It’s just a good time.”
As the team heads west, they’re hoping for strong waves, solid performances, and lasting memories at one of the biggest events in collegiate surfing.
