Skiers looking for snow in the heart of summer will once again find it in Italy’s Bormio region. Passo Stelvio, one of the world’s few summer-only ski resorts, is set to reopen on May 31, 2025, offering a rare chance to ski under the summer sun. Located on the Stelvio Glacier, the resort will remain open through November 2.
Nestled in the Stelvio National Park and surrounded by the dramatic Ortles-Cevedale mountains, the glacier features the largest summer ski area in the Alps. It boasts 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) of skiable terrain that appeals to beginners and experts alike.
Passo Stelvio’s opening each year depends on the clearance of the Stelvio Pass, the high mountain road that leads to the glacier. This iconic alpine route, celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2025, is scheduled to reopen on Friday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m.
Skiers can access the slopes via a network of modern lifts, including cable cars and drag lifts. The skiable terrain stretches from 2,758 meters (9,049 feet) at the Stelvio Pass to 3,450 meters (11,319 feet) at Mount Cristallo. While experienced skiers can tackle the steep gradients and technical descents, newcomers can take lessons from top instructors affiliated with Bormio’s well-known ski schools. The area also offers specific tracks for ski mountaineering.
The glacier is not just a haven for recreational skiers—it’s also a favored training ground for professional athletes. Each summer, elite competitors return to sharpen their skills at altitude. Last year, Olympic gold medalist Sofia Goggia made her comeback here after a serious knee injury, launching a successful return to competition.
As Bormio prepares to host Alpine Skiing and Ski Mountaineering events for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, Passo Stelvio is expected to once again draw national teams, rising stars, and dedicated enthusiasts from around the world.
