While most ski resorts in the United States are closing or have already closed for the season, one unique ski area is preparing to open this Memorial Day weekend, May 26.
Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area, located along Beartooth Highway near Cody, Wyoming, operates only during the summer months. The highway is not plowed in winter, making the mountain inaccessible at that time.
The ski area offers 600 acres of terrain for skiing and snowboarding, with slopes ranging from 15 to 50 degrees in steepness.
It has 1,000 vertical feet serviced by two poma surface lifts. The highest point reaches 10,900 feet above sea level. Skiers and snowboarders tackling the Twin Lakes Headwall should have advanced intermediate or expert skills.
Beartooth Basin plans to remain open from May 26 to July 6, weather and snow conditions permitting. Currently, spring plowing and maintenance work is underway on Beartooth Highway. This effort is a joint operation between the Montana Department of Transportation and the National Park Service.
