Upshur County, WV — A free youth mountain biking event is set to roll into Upshur County on Friday, May 10. Aimed at students in grades 6–12, the “Try It” event invites young riders to experience mountain biking, even if they’ve never tried it before. Bikes and helmets will be provided for those without equipment.

Hosted by the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), the event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Upshur County Trails inside the Upshur County Recreational Park.

Organizers say the event is open to all experience levels and is a perfect opportunity for young people to explore the sport, build confidence, and learn about local NICA programs in West Virginia.

“We’re launching a new team in the area, and this event is a great way for kids to try mountain biking — even if they’ve never ridden before,” said Jessica Harmening, Director of Coaches and Team Development at NICA.

While students are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets, it’s not a requirement. A fleet of bikes and safety gear will be available on-site for anyone who needs them.

“Not having a bike shouldn’t stop anyone from participating,” Harmening said. “We’ll provide bikes and helmets for the event. And if a student wants to join a team afterward but doesn’t own a bike, coaches and league staff will help make it happen.”

Bill Reger, NICA Head Coach and Team Director, said the organization’s mission is to build strong minds, bodies, character, and communities through cycling. He emphasized how the sport helps kids meet new people, explore new places, and create lasting memories.

“We’re a youth development program that uses bikes as tools,” Harmening added. “Some kids come to train and race, while others just want to ride with friends. Everyone is welcome — racing is not required.”

Each year, NICA holds five events known as “event weekends.” These include a Saturday campout filled with games and activities, followed by a race on Sunday. But the focus remains on personal growth and community, not just competition.

“The real impact happens in the connection between riders and their coaches,” Harmening said. “That relationship creates a supportive space for learning, no matter a rider’s background or skill level.”

Reflecting on her own experience, Harmening said mountain biking has changed her life.

“I was always a cyclist, but not a mountain biker,” she shared. “When I was asked to start a team, I didn’t know how. I learned alongside my student-athletes, and it became one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.”
