Competition Window Opens June 9 at Lower Trestles as Title Race Heats Up.
LOWER TRESTLES, San Clemente, Calif. (Sunday, June 8, 2025) — The 2025 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour resumes tomorrow at one of surfing’s most iconic venues, Lower Trestles, with the Lexus Trestles Pro presented by Outerknown. This marks Stop No. 8 of the season, with the competition window running from Monday, June 9 through Tuesday, June 17.
World No. 1s Gabriela Bryan of Hawaii and Jordy Smith of South Africa lead a stacked field of contenders vying for the World Title. With ideal waves forecasted and local talent poised to shine, the stakes are high on the Southern California coast.
San Clemente Stars Return Home
The event serves as a homecoming for several San Clemente surfers, including 2023 and 2024 World Title contender Griffin Colapinto and his brother Crosby, the 2024 Rookie of the Year. They will be joined by fellow locals Cole Houshmand and wildcard entries Sawyer Lindblad and Kirra Pinkerton. Also entering as wildcards are Dimitri Poulos and 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater, who aims for a record-extending seventh CT win at Trestles.
“This is really special,” said Griffin Colapinto. “We learned to surf here. This contest made us dream about being pro surfers. Now we’re here, and hopefully we can inspire the next generation the way the Gudauskas brothers inspired us. This wave brings out the best in everyone.”
Gabriela Bryan Aims for First Trestles Win
Gabriela Bryan, the 2022 Rookie of the Year, has held the World No. 1 ranking since the Gold Coast event earlier this season. Now she enters her first Championship Tour event at Trestles with high hopes of extending her lead in the title race.
“I grew up surfing here during the summers,” said Bryan. “To now compete at Trestles on the CT feels like a full-circle moment. Wearing the yellow jersey reminds me that my hard work is paying off.”
Bryan has three CT wins and now sets her sights on becoming Kauaʻi’s first World Champion since Andy Irons in 2004.
Jordy Smith Back in Yellow at Trestles
Veteran surfer Jordy Smith returns to Lower Trestles for the first time since 2017, when he also held the top spot in the rankings. With two previous Trestles victories (2014 and 2016), Smith brings experience and confidence into this critical event.
“I’ve had some great memories here,” Smith said. “I used to live in San Clemente and surfed with my dad. For me, it’s all about showing up every day and doing your best. All the small efforts add up.”
Smith now leads the men’s field into Stop No. 8, looking to build on his momentum and inch closer to a long-awaited World Title.
Wildcards Could Shake Up the Field
Wildcard entries could play a major role in this year’s event. Kelly Slater, still a threat at 53, returns with his eyes on another Trestles victory. Lindblad, the 2024 Rookie of the Year, missed the Mid-season Cut but is set to rejoin the Tour in 2026. Meanwhile, Pinkerton, the 2018 World Junior Champion, currently ranks No. 5 on the Challenger Series and aims to capitalize on her wildcard opportunity.
The first call for competition will be made at 7:45 a.m. PDT on Monday, June 9, with a possible start at 8:00 a.m., depending on conditions.
As the race for the 2025 World Title intensifies, all eyes turn to San Clemente, where experience, local knowledge, and rising talent will collide in a week of high-stakes surfing.
