WACO, Texas (KWTX) – As temperatures climb across Central Texas, residents and visitors alike are heading to water and surf parks to beat the heat.

“It might hit 100 degrees in May already,” said Mike Schwaad, general manager of Waco Surf. “It looks like it’s gonna be a spicy summer.”

Waco Surf, a popular destination for both locals and tourists, opened its surf park in March and recently opened its water park for the season in May. The venue has already welcomed international guests, including a family from Sayulita, Mexico—a town well known for its own surfing culture.

Kala Ortega, one of the visitors from Sayulita, said the experience at Waco Surf stands out. “It’s so different from any other wave I’ve ever surfed,” Ortega said.

Despite the rising temperatures, the heat hasn’t discouraged guests from enjoying the water.

“It’s pretty hot out today,” said Ortega’s relative, Leah Carranza Iracleous. “I think it’s the hottest day we’ve had since we got to town. But being in the water, you barely notice. You cool off quickly, there’s a nice breeze, and you get submerged every time you wipe out.”

Waco Surf’s water park will remain open through September 7, while its surf park will continue operating through December—offering Central Texans and traveling surfers a refreshing escape as the summer heat sets in.
