As the PGA Championship looms large later this month, golfing sensation Rory McIlroy has firmly distanced himself from the ongoing PGA Tour politics, choosing instead to channel his full energy into his upcoming tournament performance.

The 35-year-old golfer, who won the Masters at Augusta in April, aims to add more laurels to his storied career at this major. After 16 failed attempts, McIlroy finally triumphed in a dramatic play-off against Justin Rose, becoming the first European to complete the career Grand Slam.Since securing the coveted green jacket, McIlroy appears to be free from the heavy pressure and high expectations that previously accompanied him into every major event. This newfound freedom has allowed him to focus more intently on his game, a development that could spell trouble for his competitors in the upcoming PGA Championship.

In recent years, McIlroy delved into professional golf’s political arena. But now, he’s emphatically distancing himself, stating: “I’m out of the politics. I’m off the board, and clueless about tour changes. At this point, I don’t care. I just want to play, shoot low scores, and focus on peak performance.” This shift allows him to fully concentrate on his game.

Despite winning the Masters, McIlroy’s parents missed the event due to moving house. Last week, he opened up about their emotional reunion, admitting he was overcome with emotion. “I just needed to be with my family. The two days we spent together were perfect,” he said. “I’m not usually so emotional, but seeing my dad was incredible. And my mum… we both had a good cry.”

Looking back on his victory, McIlroy reflected on the 14-year journey. “After that 2011 loss with a four-shot lead, this win felt like years of emotion finally releasing on the 18th green. Moments like these make every setback worthwhile. I can’t wait to celebrate with my parents in Northern Ireland—they made so many sacrifices for me.”

McIlroy has previous experience of success at the PGA Championship, having won the tournament in 2014 when he defeated Phil Mickelson. As the tournament kicks off later this week, he will be hoping to replicate that success and add another major title to his name. With his new focus on the game and his personal life in a good place, McIlroy seems poised to give it his all on the course.
