Erin Paterson, a passionate young surfer, has been crowned the under-14s Scottish Girls Junior Surf champion after a stunning performance off the coast of Fraserburgh earlier this month.
The 13-year-old, a member of Belhaven Surf Club, transitioned from skateboarding to surfing, and her dedication has clearly paid off. Despite the serious nature of the competition, Erin was initially unaware of how significant the event was.
According to her mother, Maria Houseman, Erin entered the competition simply to enjoy the experience. “She just enjoyed the atmosphere, and when she realized she had won, she was shocked and thrilled,” Maria said.
Erin’s interest in action sports started at a young age, beginning with skateboarding. Maria recalled, “She started skateboarding at the age of two at The Space in North Berwick.” Erin’s older brother, Finlay, also a skateboarder, inspired her, and after The Space closed, Erin continued to practice with him.
Erin’s love for surfing began at The Compass School in Haddington, where she had her first lesson through the school’s surf club. Since then, she has spent time at Belhaven Surf Club and the newly opened Lost Shore in Ratho. Additionally, Erin practices on local pump tracks, which simulate the flow of waves, helping her refine her skills.
Maria believes her daughter’s competitive spirit and love of nature contribute to her success. “She loves being outdoors and is always eager to challenge herself in sports,” Maria said. With her national title now under her belt, Erin is clearly a young athlete to watch.
