Abergavenny is preparing to welcome the 2025 UK Open and National Paragliding Accuracy Championships, set for June 21 and 22 at the Blorenge. The event will attract several international pilots competing for UK awards and aiming to improve their global rankings under the Air Sports Federation (FAI).

Competitors will attempt to land precisely in Castle Meadows, targeting an area roughly the size of a two pence coin.

William Lawrence, one of the event organizers, explained why Abergavenny was chosen as the venue. “The major consideration was having enough space for less experienced pilots to stay safe,” he said. “We want the best pilots to perform at their peak, but also need to accommodate newcomers. Castle Meadows offers plenty of room for safe run-off.”

Lawrence noted that the last time the championship was held in Wales was in 2018, and it has been even longer since it took place in South Wales.

While the location is relatively urban compared to typical paragliding sites, organizers see this as a benefit for the local community. Lawrence said, “Many of our competitions take place in remote areas, which limits local support and sponsorship opportunities. Here, we have a pub across the road, shops, and supermarkets nearby. This allows the community to be part of the event since pilots will be landing right on their doorstep.”

The Abergavenny branch of the Royal British Legion will have a presence at Castle Meadows during the weekend, raising funds for their cause and the Poppy Appeal.

However, hosting the competition near a populated area brings unique challenges. Lawrence emphasized that organizers are working closely with local authorities to ensure safety. “We’re currently finalizing permissions with the council to be on-site,” he said. “Our biggest concern is public safety—people accidentally running onto landing sites could cause accidents, especially when judges are focused on pilots and may not see bystanders nearby.”

Organizers are taking every precaution to protect both participants and the local environment, ensuring a safe and successful event for everyone involved.
