Miles Phillips, a 20-year-old skier from Kendal, has claimed the title of Mr. Slush Cup 2025 at a popular Canadian competition. Phillips secured the win at the 95th Slush Cup event last month, improving on his runner-up finish in 2024.
The annual Banff Cup takes place on the final day of the ski season in the Rocky Mountains. It challenges costumed skiers and snowboarders to skim across a 110-foot pond of icy water — a test of skill, balance, and daring.
Phillips began skiing at age six at Kendal Ski Club but did not experience real snow until his first trip to France four years later. His mother, Mel Waszkiel, praised the club’s instructors, especially Mr. Blyth, who also taught Miles at Dallam School and encouraged his passion for skiing and travel.
“Miles has always been determined to excel in a sport he loves, though we do worry about possible injuries,” she said.
At age 12, Phillips performed his first backflip in Austria, fueling his dream to become an Olympic freestyle skier. He later traveled to Banff, Canada, on a working holiday visa, spending two ski seasons there while practicing whenever he could between shifts.
After narrowly missing out on the title in 2024, Phillips returned to the Slush Cup determined to win. Competing dressed as Batman, he made history with a switch 180 onto the water and another switch 180 off the pool. He defeated his main rival, nicknamed the Penguin, to take the crown.
Phillips received $1,000 and a season ski pass as prizes. The Slush Cup is North America’s longest-running end-of-season pond skim event, dating back to 1928 at Sunshine Village in Banff. The competition also features a halftime show, celebrity judges, and an après-ski celebration.
Phillips says he plans to return in 2026 to defend his title.
