Australia’s coastline was the stage for a showcase of surfing excellence this week, as three major competitions wrapped up with standout performances, cultural celebrations, and rising stars. From the legendary Bells Beach to the Sunshine State’s surf breaks, talent from across the country delivered thrilling action.
Indigenous Titles Celebrate Culture and Competition at Bells Beach
The 2025 Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles concluded on Sunday at Djarrak (Bells Beach), bringing together some of the country’s top Indigenous surfers. The event was a powerful mix of sport, culture, and community.
Queensland’s Landen Smales emerged as a dominant force, claiming both the Open Men’s Shortboard and Longboard titles. His performance included a near-perfect ride, scoring 9.67. New South Wales surfer Lehaini Zoric was equally impressive, winning both the Open Women’s and Junior Girls divisions with confidence and style. In the Women’s Longboard, Melissa Combo (NSW) stood out with a polished display, while Victoria’s Rhys Collins secured the Masters Men’s title.
Beyond the waves, the event honored sportsmanship and community spirit. Zac Maloney from New South Wales received the Community Spirit Award for his positive presence and respectful approach throughout the week.
Queensland’s Junior Surfers Blaze Through State Titles on Sunshine Coast
Meanwhile, young talent took to the waves on the Sunshine Coast for the opening round of the 2025 Queensland Grommet Surfing Titles. Held in clean, 3-foot conditions at Alex Skate Park Beach on Sunday, the event gave junior surfers a chance to earn a spot at the upcoming Australian Junior Surfing Titles.
Sage Fleming delivered a standout performance in the Under-12 Girls division, taking the win with confidence. In a thrilling finish, Flynn Swierczewski claimed victory in the Under-12 Boys with a 7.93-point ride in the final seconds of his heat. The Under-14 divisions saw strong showings from Navah Holmes and Brandon Davidson, who rounded out a competitive day.
The junior surfers will now head to the Gold Coast on 21–22 June for the second and final event. Results from both rounds will determine Queensland’s overall champions.
