SAN DIEGO — Water sports enthusiasts will have a chance to compete in a variety of races this weekend as Mission Bay welcomes the inaugural Mission Bay Foil and SUP Competition.
Organized by Bird Rock Funding, the event will take place on Sunday, May 31, beginning at 9 a.m. at Playa Pacifica Park. Competitors in kite surfing, wing foiling, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and electric foiling (e-foiling) will face off in multiple race categories throughout the day.
Organizers say the competition aims to make the most of Mission Bay’s evolving water conditions, especially with the growing popularity of foil boards.
“We don’t get many wind events because our conditions are not reliable,” organizers noted. “Foiling has changed this previous restriction, and it’s time we had an organized contest.”
The day will kick off with a competitor meeting at 9 a.m., followed by a full schedule of races:
- SUP Pro: 9:30 a.m.
- SUP Casual: 10:00 a.m.
- E-Foil: 10:30 a.m.
- Kite Race Pro: 11:30 a.m.
- Kite Race Casual: 11:50 a.m.
- Wing Foil Race Pro: 12:10 p.m.
- Wing Foil Race Casual: 12:30 p.m.
- Kite Big Air / Best Trick: 12:45 p.m.
- Wing Foil Best Trick: 12:45 p.m.
Each event will award a trophy to the first-place finisher. The top three competitors in each category will also be recognized with podium photographs. Gift cards will be awarded in the events that attract the most participants.
Entry to the competition is free. However, participants can make an optional $30 donation to receive a custom event rash guard featuring the official logo.
