ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) — The Minnesota Mountain Bike Series launched its 2024 season on Sunday with the first of ten scheduled races, drawing more than 400 athletes to Gamehaven Scout Reservation in Rochester.
The event marked the opening of the nonprofit’s competitive calendar, offering categories for all skill levels — from kids and beginners to intermediate, advanced, and marathon racers. Riders navigated challenging terrain in a family-friendly atmosphere that celebrated both athleticism and community.
“It’s great to see, especially the kids, when they cross that finish line and they just have huge smiles on their faces,” said Scott Lund, president of the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series. “They’re so proud of what they’ve accomplished and already excited for the next race.”
Founded in the mid-1990s, the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Proceeds from the races support the maintenance and improvement of local bike trails. Each event is designed to be inclusive, with specific races for children, casual riders, and competitive athletes.
“Our races are low-key and family-friendly,” Lund explained. “Many of the kids participate as a way to prepare for high school racing. By the time their season starts, they’re in top form.”
This year’s series spans locations across Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The next race is scheduled to take place in Chisholm, a city located northwest of Duluth.
