Yamagata, Japan — Japan’s Gassan Ski Resort, known as the snowiest ski area in the world, has officially opened its slopes for the season — but unlike most resorts, its season begins in spring, not winter.
Located in Yamagata Prefecture, Gassan launched its 2024 season with an extraordinary 31 feet (950 centimeters) of accumulated snow, according to the weather tracking site Snow-Forecast.com. This makes it the ski resort with the highest reported snow depth currently operating anywhere in the world.
Why Gassan Opens So Late
Gassan’s late opening is not due to delay — it’s by design. The resort receives so much snow during the winter months that it is physically impossible to operate safely. Roads are buried and lifts can’t run. It’s only when spring arrives and the snowpack begins to stabilize that crews can start clearing the area and preparing the terrain.
The resort typically opens in April and continues through July, offering a unique experience for skiers and snowboarders eager to extend their season into the warmer months.
Heavy Snowfall and a Spring Skiing Paradise
This year’s opening was marked by an overwhelming amount of snow, with recent storms forcing some ski lifts to close temporarily due to safety concerns. Now, with milder spring temperatures ranging from 50°F to 68°F depending on altitude, operations have resumed and conditions are ideal for spring skiing.
Minimal Facilities, Maximum Adventure
Unlike major ski resorts with sprawling infrastructure, Gassan remains rustic. It features just one chairlift and two rope tows. There are only 2.5 miles of groomed trails. The real draw is the untouched terrain, attracting advanced skiers and snowboarders who prefer backcountry and off-piste adventures.
Gassan is located on Mount Gassan, part of the sacred Dewa Sanzan mountain range. Its remote setting and deep snow make it a bucket-list destination for snow sports enthusiasts willing to venture off the beaten path.
