BELLINGHAM, WA — The 52nd edition of the Ski to Sea relay race got underway Sunday with a mass start in the cross-country skiing leg at Mt. Baker Ski Area, marking the beginning of one of Washington State’s most iconic multi-sport competitions.
Held annually on Memorial Day weekend, the Ski to Sea race is a seven-leg relay that begins in the mountains and ends at sea. Teams of three to eight athletes tackle a challenging and diverse course that spans multiple disciplines: cross-country skiing, downhill skiing or snowboarding, running, road biking, canoeing, cyclocross biking, and sea kayaking.
After the nordic ski segment, racers transitioned through a scenic and grueling route that winds through several towns in Whatcom County, including Glacier, Maple Falls, Kendall, Everson, Lynden, and Ferndale. The race culminates at Marine Park in Bellingham’s historic Fairhaven district, where finishers are cheered on by crowds of spectators.
The Ski to Sea event has been a Northwest tradition since its first run in 1973. More than just a race, it celebrates outdoor adventure, team spirit, and regional pride. The competition draws hundreds of participants and thousands of visitors from across the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and beyond.
Coinciding with the race, the Historic Fairhaven Festival adds to the festivities with live music, local food, and artisan vendors, making it the largest one-day event in Whatcom County.
Organizers and participants praised this year’s turnout, which saw strong representation across all legs of the race. With its unique mix of sports and scenic backdrop, Ski to Sea continues to be a hallmark event for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
