Five Michigan Tech Nordic Skiers Earn Academic All-District Honors

HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech continues to shine both on the snow and in the classroom, as five Nordic skiers have been named to the 2024–25 Academic All-District® At-Large Team, an honor presented by College Sports Communicators (CSC).

The award recognizes student-athletes for outstanding achievements in both athletic competition and academic performance. Representing the Huskies this year are Bridget Burns, Colin Freed, Greta Hansen, Tryg Solberg, and Marie Sølverud Wangen — all of whom met the rigorous criteria, including a minimum 3.50 GPA and notable contributions to their sport.

Bridget Burns

A sophomore majoring in Environmental Engineering, Burns boasts a 3.94 GPA. She captured the 2025 CCSA Classic title and earned All-CCSA Second Team honors. Burns qualified for the NCAA Championships and delivered a strong performance, finishing in the top 30 in the 20K skate event.

Colin Freed

Freed recently graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and maintained a 3.60 GPA. He earned All-CCSA First Team recognition after securing four CCSA wins and standing on the podium in every CCSA skate race of the season. Notably, he was the top CCSA finisher at the U.S. Cross Country Ski National Championships and helped propel the Tech men’s team to a top-10 NCAA finish with a top-20 result in the classic race.

Greta Hansen

Hansen, a sophomore studying Exercise Science, has a 3.89 GPA. She was named to the All-CCSA First Team following a season with four podium finishes and consistent top-five results in all skate races. She finished second in the classic at the CCSA Championships and ranked third overall in the CCSA season standings. At the NCAA Championships, Hansen placed 25th in the skate race.

Tryg Solberg

Solberg is pursuing a Master’s degree in Geographic Information Science with a 3.93 GPA. A consistent performer, he was named the 2025 CCSA Skate Champion and earned All-CCSA First Team honors. He recorded four podiums and six top-10 finishes this season. At the NCAA Championships, he placed 20th in the mass start skate, marking his second consecutive national appearance.

Marie Sølverud Wangen

Wangen graduated with a degree in Engineering Management, holding a 3.94 GPA. She was a standout in her final season, earning All-CCSA First Team honors and achieving four podium finishes, including a runner-up placement in the NCAA Regional classic. She also competed in three national sprint finals and led the Huskies in the classic at the NCAA Championships.

The CSC Academic All-America® program honors athletes from NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, the NAIA, and the College Division who excel academically and athletically. These five athletes now advance to the national Academic All-America® ballot. Women’s team honorees will be announced on July 8, 2025, with men’s teams to follow on July 9.

Michigan Tech’s continued success in both academics and athletics highlights the program’s commitment to excellence across all fronts.
