TULLAHOMA, Tenn. — Several people were injured after a plane believed to be used for skydiving crashed in Middle Tennessee on Sunday, June 8, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred on Old Shelbyville Road in Tullahoma, roughly 70 miles southeast of Nashville. Authorities confirmed that an estimated 16 to 20 people were on board at the time of the incident. Several of those on board were airlifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Tennessee Highway Patrol wrote:
“Happening Now: Coffee County — THP troopers are assisting @TullahomaPD at the scene of a plane crash on Old Shelbyville Road. Initial reports suggest 16–20 people were on board. Some have been airlifted to nearby hospitals. This is an active scene. Local officials will provide further updates.”
City of Tullahoma spokesperson Lyle Russell told CNN that the crash happened around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday near the Tullahoma Regional Airport.
“At approximately 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, a plane crash occurred at Tullahoma Regional Airport,” Russell stated. “The scene is being secured by local authorities while FAA officials are en route to continue the investigation.”
Russell confirmed that while no fatalities had been reported, minor injuries were sustained in the crash.
Though authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the type of aircraft, early reports from law enforcement suggest the plane was being used for skydiving activities. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to lead the investigation into the cause of the crash.
As of Sunday evening, the scene remained active, with emergency services continuing their response and support efforts. Further details, including the identities of those involved and the exact cause of the crash, are expected to be released once the FAA completes its initial investigation.
