ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Backwater Gamblers Water Ski Club is set to kick off its 46th season on Sunday, May 25, bringing thrilling water ski shows back to the Rock River. The Quad Cities’ premier waterski team will perform free, family-friendly shows every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Ben Williamson Park in Rock Island.
This year’s performances will embrace a medieval theme called “Backwater Kingdom.” According to Collin Ridgley, the team announcer and co-show director, the shows will feature “knights, princesses, kings, queens, and everything like that.”
Founded in 1980 with only 14 members, the Gamblers have grown into a nationally ranked team with over 120 members of all ages—from toddlers to retirees. This season marks Ridgley’s first as show director, a role he shares with two of his brothers, making it a true family effort.
The shows include a mix of human pyramids, barefoot skiing, comedy skits, intricate choreography, and impressive stunts and flips. Ridgley described the experience as “magical,” promising “crazy cool stunts” and “beautiful ballet and swivel moves by the ladies.”
One highlight expected to return is the human pyramid. The team aims to build up to a four-tier pyramid, though early in the season they’ll start with three tiers to ensure safety and precision.
The Gamblers train several days a week, with practices on Monday and Tuesday, shows on Wednesday, and additional skiing on weekends. Ridgley said the early shows will start small and gradually grow in complexity through August.
In addition to their regular shows, the Gamblers will host a regional competition on July 11–12. The event will bring six to seven teams from across the country to Rock Island for performances.
While the team already boasts strong talent, they are actively seeking more volunteers and athletes. Opportunities are available for skiers, boat drivers, concession stand workers, and behind-the-scenes helpers. Interested individuals can find more information on the team’s website, along with the full summer show schedule.
Ridgley assured that whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, the Backwater Gamblers’ shows offer a fun and family-friendly experience. “I don’t think anybody has more fun than Backwater,” he said.
