May 19, 2025 — Canada’s final ski lifts stop spinning today.

As the 2024-2025 ski season draws to a close, only three major Canadian resorts—Sommet Saint-Sauveur in Quebec, Banff Sunshine Village in Alberta, and Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia—remained open into Victoria Day. All three officially end their seasons today, marking the conclusion of Canada’s lift-served skiing for the winter.

Banff Sunshine Village is celebrating its final day with a long-standing tradition: the Slush Cup, a festive pond-skimming event that dates back to 1928. Participants attempt to glide across an icy pond on skis or snowboards, with creativity and flair rewarded. Winners are crowned “Mr. Slush Cup” and “Mrs. Slush Cup,” taking home $1,000 in prize money, a 2025-2026 season pass, and a full year of bragging rights.

At Whistler Blackcomb, today’s operations are limited to the Blackcomb side, as Whistler Mountain wrapped up its season nearly a month ago, on April 21. Recent footage shared by skier Jérémie Paquette suggests that late-season conditions at Blackcomb have remained strong, drawing die-hard spring skiers to the slopes for one last run.

Sommet Saint-Sauveur, located just north of Montreal, is also closing today. Known for stretching its season well into spring, the resort is ending on a typically modest patch of snow—common for late-season skiing in the Northeast. Still, the resort managed to hold on longer than most across the country.

U.S. Ski Resorts Still Open

For Canadians hoping to continue their ski season beyond today, options remain—but they’ll need to look south of the border. Several U.S. resorts are still running lifts, including Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, Palisades Tahoe in California, and Mammoth Mountain. These destinations have become go-to spots for spring skiing enthusiasts, offering deep snowpacks and sunny skies.

Mammoth Mountain recently confirmed it will stay open into June, continuing its reputation as one of the longest-running ski resorts in North America. The team from POWDER magazine visited last week and reported excellent spring conditions.

Arizona Snowbowl also announced plans to remain open into early June for a second straight season, giving skiers and snowboarders another option to enjoy the final weeks of lift-accessed snow.

Spring Skiing—Still Worth the Trip

Planning a last-minute ski trip isn’t always easy, but for those with unused vacation days or no plans for Memorial Day weekend, the mountains still offer plenty of adventure. With fewer crowds, slushy snow, and shorter lift lines, spring skiing can provide a more relaxed alternative to peak-season powder days.

So whether it’s a final pond skim in Canada or sun-drenched turns in the Sierra, there’s still time for one last run before summer sets in.
