Cape Byron Steiner School student Mali Adam has been selected to represent Australia at the prestigious Stab High Japan 2025 surfing competition, set to take place this May. The Class 8 student will test her skills against some of the best junior surfers in the world at the PerfectSwell Shizunami wave pool.
Mali will compete in the ‘Ladybirds’ division, a category for female surfers under 15. She is entered in the “Highest and Best Air” contest — a highlight of the event known for showcasing progressive surfing and aerial maneuvers.
Fresh from her recent victory at the SanBah Cadet Cup in Newcastle’s Bar Beach, Mali continues to build on a string of strong performances that have marked her steady rise in the junior surfing ranks.
Despite the spotlight, Mali remains humble.
“I’m just really excited to be heading over to Japan,” she said. “It’ll be amazing to surf with such a great crew. I’m sure I’ll come back with some wild stories — and hopefully land some good airs!”
Known within the school community for her calm focus and dedication, Mali balances her athletic pursuits with her academic responsibilities at Cape Byron Steiner School. The school has expressed its full support as she embarks on this international adventure.
“We’re incredibly proud of Mali and the way she continues to chase her dreams while staying grounded,” a school spokesperson said. “We wish her all the best in this exciting next chapter.”
Mali’s journey to Japan marks another step forward in what is shaping up to be a promising surfing career.
