Cairns Regional Council has moved forward with the next stage of the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park (SMBP) trail expansion, submitting key consultant reports to the Queensland Government under the Tracks n Trails Program.
In 2024, the Council secured $150,000 in funding from the State Government to support the preparation of essential planning and financial reports, which are crucial for the progress of the project.
The reports, prepared by RPS Consulting and BDO Pty Ltd, highlight both the opportunities and challenges of developing the expanded trail network. They also recommend a sustainable model for the park’s operation.
The expansion will increase the SMBP trail network from 32km to 82km, solidifying its status as a top destination for mountain biking.
The Council will continue to work closely with the Queensland Government and the Cairns Mountain Bike Club to ensure the project is delivered successfully and managed long-term.
A $14 million commitment from the State Government will fund the construction, with work expected to begin once final approvals are obtained.
The proposed trailhead and a four-stage development plan are designed to improve the user experience and ensure the park’s viability for years to come.
Additionally, an independent operating model has been recommended to guarantee sustainable funding and governance for the expanded trail network.
