Punta Rocas eyed as potential venue; plans also underway for SUP and 2026 South American events
LIMA, Peru — The Peruvian Surf Federation (FENTA) is in advanced negotiations with the International Surfing Association (ISA) to host the 2025 World Junior Surfing Championships. The event, which has yet to confirm a location, could take place in November at Punta Rocas, according to FENTA President Elfri Navarrete.
Navarrete made the announcement during the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2025 South American Junior Championships and reiterated the news in a live broadcast of the event.
“We are working hard to bring the World Championships to Punta Rocas this November,” Navarrete said. “The goal is to use either the Men’s or Women’s Championship as a secondary podium.”
One of the main conditions for hosting the event, he explained, is securing a declaration from the Peruvian Congress that classifies the tournament as a matter of national interest. This status would allow the government to allocate the necessary funding. FENTA has already submitted the required documents, and the approval process is reportedly at an advanced stage.
FENTA leaders expressed strong optimism about the outcome. Both Elfri and Richard Navarrete voiced their belief that Peru stands a solid chance of securing the hosting rights.
Looking ahead, FENTA is also planning to propose the town of Máncora as the host for the 2026 South American Junior Surfing Championships. Richard Navarrete announced during his closing speech that a formal proposal will soon be submitted to the South American Surfing Confederation (Confesurf).
In addition, Peru is working to bring the Stand Up Paddle (SUP) World Championships back to the country. Navarrete emphasized the importance of this move, saying, “A great deal of effort is being made to secure the ISA Junior World Championships for Peru. We also aim to bring the paddle championships here and restore that discipline to the professional circuit.”
Peru previously hosted the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in 2011. That year remains historic for the nation, as it marked its only victory in the event. Cristóbal de Col led the way with a gold medal in the Under-18 division, alongside several other medal wins for the Peruvian team.
