TRESTLES, CALIFORNIA – Bettylou Sakura Johnson and Yago Dora claimed decisive victories at the 2025 Trestles Pro, marking their second wins on this year’s World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour. The event, the eighth stop on the tour, delivered high-stakes performances, culminating in standout finishes by both athletes.
In the women’s draw, 20-year-old Hawaiian Bettylou Sakura Johnson proved unstoppable from the outset. She posted the highest women’s heat total of the season in the quarterfinals, scoring 17.83, signaling her dominance early on. In the semifinals, Johnson faced wildcard Sawyer Lindblad and maintained her momentum, earning 16.24 points to comfortably move into the final round.
There, she faced 22-year-old Australian Molly Picklum in a highly anticipated matchup. Johnson quickly took control of the heat, opening with an 8.00 and following it with a 9.00. Her total of 17.00 placed immense pressure on Picklum, whose two best waves – scoring 6.00 and 8.23 – combined for a 14.23. It wasn’t enough to overtake Johnson, who clinched her second CT victory of the season after winning the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro earlier this year.
“Overall, I’m just super happy with how I was able to overcome each heat and take it out,” said Johnson after her win. “I’m so psyched to bring this one home.”
In the men’s competition, Brazilian Yago Dora showcased his signature power and precision. After edging out Griffin Colapinto in the semifinals by a margin of 2.03 points, Dora advanced to the final to face Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi.
Dora took command early in the heat with an explosive 9.52 ride, later backing it up with an 8.37 for a combined total of 17.90. Despite Igarashi’s strong performance, which included a solid 16.07 heat total, Dora’s early lead held strong.
The Trestles Pro win follows Dora’s earlier success at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, making this his second Championship Tour victory of the season.
With confidence running high, both Johnson and Dora now set their sights on the upcoming VIVO Rio Pro, scheduled from June 21–29 in Brazil — a home event for Dora and the next challenge for the 2025 CT field.
