MOSES LAKE — On June 8, 80-year-old Eileen Danz took a leap into her ninth decade with an unforgettable first-time skydive. Joined by three generations of her family, the jump was more than a birthday celebration — it was a powerful family moment.
Danz, a Seattle resident, jumped at Skydive Colorado Springs alongside her daughter Sharon Palmerton, son-in-law Brett Palmerton from Moses Lake, and her granddaughter Katelyn “Katy” Hernandez — all making their first skydive. Katy, who lives in Colorado, originally suggested the idea on New Year’s Day, and the family had been planning ever since.
“It wasn’t just about a birthday,” Sharon said. “It was three generations jumping together, facing fears, and celebrating life.”
The jump held special meaning for the family. Katy released the ashes of a young family friend, whom she regarded as a nephew, who died by suicide seven years ago. “The kids were very close to him,” Sharon said. “It meant a lot to us all.”
Despite the high altitude and thrill, Eileen remained calm throughout. Sharon recalled, “She said it wasn’t a big deal — but it was. She’s the matriarch setting an example for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.”
Four generations of the family gathered to witness the moment, and emotions ran deep. Sharon said, “Afterward, we were stunned and euphoric. We didn’t even talk about it until the next day. But the adrenaline rush was incredible. Mom did amazing, loved it, and now she wants to skydive again!”
Eileen told her family she wants to try a higher jump next time, with more free-fall before the parachute opens.
Back home in Moses Lake, the family remains proud and inspired. “It reminds us you’re never too old to conquer fear,” Sharon said. “This experience has brought us closer than ever.”
